How do I pick a SIP date after salary credit?
The best SIP date is a few days after salary and before your brain finds a new EMI.

Your SIP date is a behaviour machine
If salary lands on the 1st and SIP on the 28th, you are running a 27-day temptation experiment. Most people fail it.
Rent, school, and the grocery UPI do not wait for your “end-of-month surplus” theory. Surplus is a rumour by the 20th.
Start there. Marketing copy can wait its turn.
In Ahmedabad this debate still shows up at dinners as if character, not cash flow, is the variable.
Numbers first. Feelings after the numbers get a chair.
Debit 3–5 working days after salary. Late enough that the credit has settled. Early enough that Amazon has not eaten it.
When the gap looks ugly, the gap is doing its job.
Nobody hands out a medal for pretending your Excel is braver than your salary.
Stack rent and SIP with a gap, not a collision.
Salary day plus a small buffer
Note the actual salary credit day, not the “1st” on the offer letter. Many Ahmedabad firms pay on the last working day or the 7th.
Put SIP two to five days after that. If rent NACH is the 5th, do not stack SIP on the 5th just to feel disciplined.
Open a calculator and type the ugly version first—₹18,000 SIP fighting ₹22,000 rent on the same Monday, plus a credit-card bill that also likes the 1st.
Round, optimistic inputs are how people sleep until the third bounce.
Keep ₹10,000–₹20,000 parked in that account. A SIP date without a buffer is a bounce date.
NAV on the 5th versus the 15th is noise over 12 years. Bounce on the 28th is a pattern.
If you cannot explain the result to a slightly impatient parent, you do not understand it yet.
Dates that look smart and fail
Chasing “the cheapest NAV day of the month” like it is a railway tatkal trick.
Setting five SIPs on five dates because a reel said rupee-cost averaging gets finer. You will forget one mandate.
Picking the 1st because it looks like a new life. The 1st is already booked by everyone else.
Reels compress this into a punchline. Your salary does not compress.
Your cousin’s 2017 small-cap luck is not a policy.
Change the input when life changes. Loyalty to old Excel is how people drift.
In Ahmedabad the skipped review later becomes a complaint about luck. It was maintenance.
The 28th “surplus” often does not exist.
Pick once, then stop fiddling
One salary, one cluster of SIP dates in a 3-day window. Boring is the feature.
If salary is variable (incentive heavy), keep SIP at the lower certain number and add a one-time buy after the bonus hits.
Change date once after a job switch. Do not monthly-optimize like a day trader of calendars.
Order of operations still applies: high-cost debt, then a cash buffer, then this debate.
Investing while revolving a 36% card is theatre.
Small and dated beats heroic and cancelled.
A smaller SIP or a shorter loan goal beats a heroic screenshot you cancel in six weeks.
₹18,000 SIP on an Ahmedabad payday
Take-home ₹85,000, salary 1st, rent 3rd, SIP 5th for ₹18,000. That order is why the mandate survives.
Same ₹18,000 on the 28th. By then the account often holds ₹6,000 and a bounce fee. The 28th did not fail you. The leftover myth did.
Two SIP dates — 5th and 20th — only help if the 20th amount is tiny or a second salary exists. Otherwise you built two bounce chances.
None of this is a guaranteed NAV or a sanctioned loan. It is a map.
If the plan only works at 18% returns or a 6% home loan forever, it is not a plan.
Drop the return a couple of points and raise the EMI. If it breaks, you learned cheaply.
Keep a 10% haircut for tax, fees, or the extra month the builder delays.
If salary-gap is low, move the mandate this week.
Calendar first, philosophy never
Align debit with cash, not with numerology or a “good muhurat” thread.
A SIP that goes through is worth more than a theoretically prettier NAV.
Boring consistency beats a dramatic restart every January.
Calendar reminder beats a quote about discipline.

And please date your spreadsheet. Future you will not remember which fantasy version this was.
