What percent of salary should actually go to SIP?

Percent of salary beats a viral rupee target. Dindigul take-home of ₹58,000 does not need a 1-crore thumbnail. It needs a percent that survives rent.

A percent survives raises. A rupee freezes

Someone told a Dindigul group “minimum ₹10,000 SIP.” On ₹58,000 with a parent to support, ₹10,000 is a dare, not a percent.

A working band: 20s with thin oats — 10–12% of take-home. Stable 30s — 15–20% plus EPFO. Catch-up 40s — as high as EMIs allow, not as high as YouTube allows.

Hold that tension. The pretty version comes later, if it survives.

Someone in Dindigul will still tell you a story that skips the EMI night. Ignore that person.

The spreadsheet is the easy half. The debit surviving April is the rest.

₹58,000 × 15% = ₹8,700. That is a policy. ₹25,000 because a reel said “crore” is how SIPs bounce in July.

Discomfort here is a signal. A 15% slider is not.

Nobody hands out a medal for pretending your Excel is braver than your salary.

₹58,000 with a 15% SIP policy

Age is a bandage, not a prophecy

Take-home, not CTC. Always.

Subtract the card jungle before you pick a heroic percent.

Open a calculator and type the ugly version first—₹10,000 SIP advertised, ₹4,000 actual, 10 months of shame. A 10% auto would have been less theatre..

Type the version that would still stand after a bad bonus year.

Type ₹8,700 into the SIP calculator. Then stress 10%. If 10% also works, you have a range, not a mood.

AMFI investor corner still says past returns are not a promise. PFRDA’s NPS docs are the other percent: additional 80CCD if you actually use it, not if you screenshot it.

If you cannot explain the result to a slightly impatient parent, you do not understand it yet.

Copying a 40-year-old’s 30% on a 24-year-old salary

Counting employer PF toward this SIP percent. EPFO is already elsewhere.

A 30% SIP while renting with a 20% emergency hole.

Never raising the percent after a hike. The rupee stays cute; inflation does not.

A rule of thumb is a starting fence, not a closing argument.

Your cousin’s 2017 small-cap luck is not a policy.

Re-run the numbers when salary, rate, or the goal date moves. That is the whole maintenance.

Dindigul is full of people who had a decent plan in 2022 and a folklore in 2026. The folklore started as an unopened app.

SIP by honesty, not by reel

Floor 10%, target 15–20% after oats

Oats 3 months: start 12%, calendar a 1-point bump at appraisal.

Oats empty: 8% SIP + oats until 3 months, then 12%.

Age 42, kids, EMI 35%: SIP may sit at 8–10% and that is physics.

Buffer first, ugly debt second, this goal third. Reverse it and the goal becomes a loan.

Investing while revolving a 36% card is theatre.

Cut the size before you cut the habit. Habits are expensive to rebuild.

A smaller SIP or a shorter loan goal beats a heroic screenshot you cancel in six weeks.

₹58,000 × 15% = ₹8,700, not a slogan

₹8,700 × 180 months is principal ~₹15.7 lakh. Percent did that.

Same salary, 10% : ₹5,800. Still adult. 3% is incense.

Hike to ₹68,000, keep 15% → ₹10,200. That is an age-based tool hiding in payroll.

If someone sells the same figure as a guarantee, walk.

If the plan only works at 18% returns or a 6% home loan forever, it is not a plan.

Drop the return a couple of points and raise the EMI. If it breaks, you learned cheaply.

Keep a 10% haircut for tax, fees, or the extra month the builder delays.

Percent quality

Step the percent, not just the rupee

Percent first. Rupee second.

If the percent needs overtime every month, it is not ideal. It is a costume.

Quiet deposits look dull until they are the only thing that showed up.

Calendar reminder beats a quote about discipline.

Do not forward a 40-message thesis. Send the tool and the date you used.

And please date your spreadsheet. Future you will not remember which fantasy version this was.

Quick answers

What is a good SIP percentage of Indian take-home?

Often 10–20% on top of EPF, depending on age, EMIs, and the emergency pile. AMFI wants you to treat returns as uncertain.

Does NPS replace this percent?

NPS can sit inside the percent if you chose it. PFRDA’s caps and lock-ins still apply. It is not a liquid SIP.

Should the percent stay fixed?

The floor stays. The rupee should rise with salary so the percent does not silently fall.
