What does waiting two years to start a SIP actually cost?
Waiting feels free. It is a SIP increase you never voted for. Jalandhar workshops know idle machines cost money. Idle decades do too.

Later is a price list
Jalandhar said “after Diwali.” Then “after the new shed.” The shed is painted. The SIP login is still a bookmark.
₹10,000 SIP for 22 years at 12% sketches ~₹1.1 crore. Wait 2 years, keep the same end date (20 years left): you need ~₹12,000 to rhyme, or you accept a smaller pile.
If you skip this step, the rest is theatre.
I keep seeing people in Jalandhar argue this on family WhatsApp like it is a moral issue.
It is arithmetic plus behaviour. The arithmetic is easier.
Wait 5 years: to hit that original ~₹1.1 crore in the leftover 17 years you need about ₹16,000. The market did not punish you. The calendar did.
If the pair already pinches, do not dress it up with a braver rate.
Nobody hands out a medal for pretending your Excel is braver than your salary.
Same finish year, fatter debit
Lock a finish year (child’s 18th, your 55th). Waiting with a fixed finish is how EMI-style pain appears in SIP form.
Run the calculator twice: start now vs start later with the same end year. The delta is the lecture.
Open a calculator and type the ugly version first—Two years of not investing ₹10,000 is ₹2.4 lakh never bought, plus the units those rupees would have purchased in a dip you scrolled past..
Round, optimistic inputs are how people sleep until the third bounce.
If you cannot pay ₹10,000, pay ₹4,000 this week. Waiting for a round number is theatre.
Starting ₹4,000 now beats ₹10,000 “next April.” April collects hobbies.
If you cannot explain the result to a slightly impatient parent, you do not understand it yet.
Projects that ate SIPs
“I will start when the market falls 20%.” It might fall after you needed the habit more than the discount.
Waiting till the personal loan ends in 19 months, then rolling a car loan. There is always a loan.
Back-testing the two years you skipped; they went up 31%. Now you feel cursed. You were late. That is all.
The internet will sell you a one-line rule. One-line rules do not pay EMIs.
Your cousin’s 2017 small-cap luck is not a policy.
When the salary or the date moves, reopen the calculator. Do not recycle last year’s PDF.
Jalandhar is full of people who had a decent plan in 2022 and a folklore in 2026. The folklore started as an unopened app.
Start ugly this month
Have 22 years: start ₹10,000 or whatever fits, today-ish, not after a perfect exporters’ season.
Already late: same finish year means a bigger SIP or a smaller goal. Pick one on paper.
Cash ugly this quarter: SIP ₹2,000. The delay tax is the zero.
Clear the 16% fire, keep oats, then argue about this. That sequence is not optional.
Investing while revolving a 36% card is theatre.
A thinner SIP or a slower prepay still exists. A six-month disappear does not.
A smaller SIP or a shorter loan goal beats a heroic screenshot you cancel in six weeks.
Two-year snooze on ₹10,000
₹10,000 × 22y @12% ≈ ₹1.1 crore sketch.
Same finish, 20 years left: ~₹12,000 SIP for a similar landing.
Same finish, 17 years left: ~₹16,000. “After the project” just auto-debited your future salary.
None of this is a guaranteed NAV or a sanctioned loan. It is a map.
If the plan only works at 18% returns or a 6% home loan forever, it is not a plan.
Good years are a bonus. Plans that need good years are costumes.
Keep a 10% haircut for tax, fees, or the extra month the builder delays.
If the project has no end date, the SIP should not wait for it
Waiting is not neutral. It is a silent step-up you still have to pay.
If the shed can wait one month, the SIP can start this one.
If you only work this in January, you are doing astrology.
Calendar reminder beats a quote about discipline.
Do not forward a 40-message thesis. Send the tool and the date you used.
And please date your spreadsheet. Future you will not remember which fantasy version this was.
Use this to think. Use a human with a licence before you transfer.
Quick answers
How costly is delaying a SIP by 2 years?
If the end date stays fixed, the monthly debit has to jump (often ~20% in this walkthrough) or the corpus shrinks. Waiting is a fee.
Is it better to wait for a crash?
Crashes do not send appointments. A small SIP during the wait still buys the dip if it comes.
I can only start tiny. Still worth it?
Yes. ₹2,000 alive beats ₹10,000 imaginary. You can step later.
